Boxing News - Juan Manuel Marquez urine recycling
First, the UFC’s Lyoto Machida got some (mostly curious if not negative) publicity for drinking his own urine. Now, boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is eliciting the same types of reactions as he revealed on the TV show Mayweather-Marquez 24/7 on HBO that is also fond of urine recycling.
The practice, called urophagia, involves the recycling of urine for the purpose of putting essential nutrients that have been accidentally expelled from the body back into it.
We’ve seen guys like Moises Alou and Jorge Posada in baseball get some attention for urinating on their hands instead of using batting gloves to get a better grip, and the media had a field day with those stories.
But something tells me that the U.S. fans just aren’t quite ready to accept urine recycling just yet, despite its long history of safe usage.
Urophagia has been practiced by many Eastern cultures and has also found a niche in Western society as well for people who believe in its restorative powers.
Whether or not this will help the underdog Marquez in his big September 19 th clash with Floyd Mayweather remains to be seen but if it’s good enough for UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Machida than it can’t be a bad idea.
Of course, the practice of urine recycling by Marquez and Machida does raise the question of why they don’t just consume more supplements and/or nutritious food. After all, these are two guys at or near the top of their respective sports who make solid albeit not amazing money right now and probably get a ton of free stuff from sponsors.
But the practice of urine recycling is probably more of a sacred custom for both of them that has always been a part of their training and nutrition programs, and if it’s not broke, why fix it, right?
Right now at BetUS.com, Marquez is an underdog in just about every way possible. The boxing betting odds for Marquez winning by a KO, TKO, or DQ are currently set at +900 while the odds for Marquez to win by a decision or technical decision are at +400.
Mayweather is a +175 for KO, TKO, or DQ and a -135 for decision or technical decision.
The fight isn’t on the level of a possible Manny Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, but it could be a classic and it’s still easily one of the top boxing matches of the year so don’t forget to check out the action in the Sportsbook before the big night.
