In the light of the cholera crisis in Zimbabwe and its invasion of South Africa and Mozambique, there have been people who have decided that enough is enough. They decided that if South Africa is unable or unwilling to resolve the problem of Zimbabwe, the ideal solution would be to boycott the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

While the reasons are different, Citizen Alert ZA as well as Petition Online have decided to unite in calling for a boycott of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Citizen Alert ZA has challenged the people who want to go to the 2010 World Cup to be "sport fans or statistics".

Petition Online has decided that since South Africa is supporting Zimbabwe and that the Cholera Crisis is out of control, there should be a boycott of the 2010 World Cup. Petition Online has even circulated a petition to be signed and sent to FIFA with the intention of removing the 2010 World Cup from South Africa.

The underwriter has had to think about the boycott of the 2010 World Cup many times before writing his opinion. He has declared that sports and politics must be separated. Regardless, the fact that there is a cholera epidemic that is spiralling out of control has made the World Cup 2010 in South Africa untenable.

It is surreal that Now Public, European Media, and even Asia and the Pacific have written extensively about the Cholera Epidemic in Zimbabwe and its neighbouring countries. The African Media has written as well about this crisis.

The Media in the American Continent with the exception of Now Public and CBC [in the opinion of the underwriter] have not covered this story as it deserves to be covered. How can people make a decision to go to South Africa with the Cholera Epidemic reaching out of control in neighbouring Zimbabwe.

Before people start accusing the underwriter of "racism", he has a medical background and is also a sports writer. He also believes that the health of the people is more important than a World Cup. It would be better to have a World Cup elsewhere than to have people contracting cholera.

This is a personal opinion and I respect the opinion of others who want to go to the World Cup in South Africa. FIFA has the power to transfer the World Cup and they have used this power against Poland and Ukraine recently to transfer the Euro 2012 games if both countries did not resolve their problems with infrastructure.

Maybe a boycott will not be effective but it will be a wake up call to South Africa. I prefer my health and the health of my family than to go to a place where the possibility of cholera can exist. I base my decision on my medical background [I have a Doctor of Medicine Degree in the Dominican Republic and work as a Utilization Review Professional in America], sports [I write sports for Now Public and the Bleacher Report], and family man [I am married and have one daughter and between them and prefer them to the World Cup that is marred by a cholera crisis in a neighbouring country].

This is a great initative. I shall be holding a banner at the Criucket in Melbourne calling on the World to boycott the FIFA World Cup 2010 as South Africa is largely responsible for propping up a murdering dictator. FIFA do you have no shame? Move the Tournament now or see it fail.
