BYU Honor Code Violation Gets Brandon Davies Suspended: What Did Brandon Davies Do?
BYU starting forward Brandon Davies was suspended the university's basketball team over "violations of the BYU honor code". This is bad news for BYU in the runup to the Final Four. BYU's announcement of Brandon Davies' suspension did not clarify what element of the honor code he had violated, or if he would ultimately be kicked off the team.
What Is the BYU Honor Code?
The BYU honor code is a set of conduct guidelines which all students and faculty at Brigham Young University are required to follow. BYU is owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), but the BYU honor code diverges from LDS teachings.
Among the BYU honor code requirements:
- Abstinence from drugs, alcohol (including coffee, cigarettes and tea)
- Chastity (no sex, no porn, no sexual harassment, no homosexuality)
- Active participation in religion
- Dress sand grooming standards (no beards, though you can apply for a beard exception)
In this sense, BYU athletes are at a bit of a disadvantage compared to their secular opponents: the BYU honor code contains many items that would not even raise an eyebrow on other campuses. Meanwhile, ESPN's Joe Lunardi still tips BYU as a number-one seed going into the playoffs, and is number three in the coaches' poll.
School officials said coach Dave Rose would address the issue following Wednesday's game against New Mexico.
