Braves-Pirates Blown Call Video: Lugo Called Safe, July 26, 2011
Julio Lugo Was Called Safe on the Game-Winning Run During the Atlanta Braves-Pittsburgh Pirates 19-Inning Game on July 26, 2011. Here is the Braves Pirates Blown Call Video
Maybe the referee just wanted to go home. That's the only explanation for the puzzling call he made during the Pittsburgh Pirates vs Atlana Braves game on July 26, 2011.
The blown call came in the 19th inning (no, that's not a typo). Atlanta's Julio Lugo scored the game-winning run even though it looked like he was clearly tagged by catcher Michael McKenry. Lugo ran home from third base on a hit from teammate Scott Proctor. Third baseman Pedro Alvarez threw the ball home in plenty of time as Lugo tried to avoid the tag. Replays show, however, that McKenry tagged Lugo out.
The umpire Jerry Meals, however, saw things differently and called Lugo safe, meaning that the game was finally over. All told, the Braves-Pirates game lasted 6 hours, 39 minutes, the longest game of the season.
Deadspin pointed out that the best part of the Braves-Pirates blown call is watching Scott Proctor do a faceplant as he runs to first base.
