BREAKING NEWS: Pistorius will go to the Olympics
by AlvarezGalloso | May 16, 2008 at 06:13 am | 169 views | 4 comments
In a week that has seen tragedy, BBC Sports has just reported that Oscar Pistorius [who is a sprinter that is a double amputee] has won his appeal to compete in the Beijing Summer Olympics of 2008. This is great news and it is hoped that it will encourage more people to compete in Sports in spite of their limitations. I am personally delighted for Oscar Pistorius.

This is actually a ground-breaking case. I agree that having Oscar Pistorius is compete is a great feat of empowerment. I wonder, though, what kind of precedent this will set going forward. Many critics have said that he has an unfair mechanical advantage, it would be interesting to see what the feeling is among his fellow competitors.

Just a follow-up. Pistorius still needs to post a fast enough qualifying time in order to be included in the individual 400m event. Even if he doesn't post the time (which is a second faster than his personal best) The South African team could still add him as a member of the 4x400m relay team.
