To quote ESPN's Adam Schefter, "our long national nightmare is over." Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre will retire.

According to Fox Sports, Brett Favre has already filed his retirement papers with the NFL.

Of course, this being Brett Favre, filing retirement papers doesn't mean much. He has retired and then come back a couple of times. But this time it looks like the Brett Favre retirement will stick. Favre spent the last season mired with injuries and controversy. On top of that, the NFL may face a work stoppage.

The Brett Favre retirement brings an end to a legendary football career that began with two Super Bowl rings and ended with injuries and controversy.
