This is a breaking story as reported on ESPN.  It has just been announced that Brett Favre has been traded to the N.Y. Jets, ending the saga that has consumed the NFL headlines over the past several weeks.  Favre, 38, is looking to return from his brief retirement, announced back in March 2008.

The 17-year quarterback spent his entire career in Green Bay as a Packer.  Since his retirement, the Packers have resolved to move on and build around their new #1 quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.  They stuck with this decision after Favre decided he wanted to return.  That meant either he needed to stay retired or accept a trade to another team.  Alas, the Packers and the future hall of famer can finally turn the page.

Favre will enter into the starting quarterback position which means the Jets will likely release or trade one of their current quarterbacks, Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington.  Speculation at this point indicates that Pennington will be the man out in this situation, giving the Jets a weathered veteran in the top of the depth chart and a youngster, Clemens, behind him to learn from one of the best in the history of the league.

The details of the trade have been released and were on par with what was previously reported.

According to NFL.com, the Packers will receive a fourth-round draft pick in 2009. The selection would turn into a third-rounder if Favre plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs, or a first-round pick if he plays in 80 percent and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.

Favre holds NFL records for career passing yards (61,655), attempts (8,758), completions (5,377), touchdown passes (442) and wins as a starter (160).  He is also only 18 starts away from overtaking Jim Marshall for the most consecutive starts at quarterback.

Hating to admit this... But being roughly the same age as Favre (though he looks a decade older) I always root for him on the age merit alone. I don't care about legacy and declining ability, which are always comments thrown at any older player in any sport, by damned if they want to play they should play.

The things is, World Groove, he is a 38 year old QB that can still play.  Outside of the occasional (if not frequent at times) errant interception pass he had no business throwing, he's still got game and drive.

Favre is a stand-up guy playing a game full of attitudes and egos.  And for me, that counts for something.  He can play and that's all.

Thanks for the good stuff mark.  I'll be secretly pulling for Favre to do well, but I gotta admit I'm glad to see him out of the AFC North...as a Bears fan, that is.

I'll have to check around, but I don't think that Favre played his "entire" career in Green Bay. I thought we got him from Atlanta in his 1st or 2nd season.

a bill miller,

You caught me on that one.  Thanks for the correction.  Referencing the wiki article on Favre, he was drafted 33rd overall in the 1991 NFL draft.  Atlanta coach, Jerry Glanville, said "it would take a plane crash for him to put Favre into the game." (nice one, Jerry)

In his career at Atlanta, he only attempted 4 passes in the 1991-92 season, and didn't complete any of them.

"The Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf traded a first-round pick (19th overall, RB Tony Smith, Southern Miss) for Favre during the following offseason. Wolf, while an assistant to the general manager of the New York Jets, had intended to take Favre in the 1991 NFL draft, but Favre was taken by the Falcons on the previous pick." (Wikipedia - Brett Favre.

It's so easy to forget those four passes. :)
