Brian Kownacki Video: Fordham Baseball Player Jumps Over Catcher
Brian Kownacki of Fordham University Had One of the Best Plays of the Year, Flipping Over an Iona Catcher At Home Plate To Score a Run
Brian Kownacki of Fordham made an amazing play to score a run in a game against Iona. Kownacki leaped over the catcher and touched home plate to score a run.
Fordham rallied from 9-1 down to win 12-9 against Iona, but what everyone was talking about was the Brian Kownacki jump over the Iona catcher. After Fordham's Chris Walker had a go-ahead hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, two players managed to rounded home.
Not content with scoring just two runs, Brian Kownacki rounded third and made his way to home plate. The throw from the outfield made it in time for the catcher to tag Kownacki, but the throw was a bit low.
Kownacki had two options. Most runners try to ram the catcher, in an attempt to jar the ball loose. Not Brian Kownacki. Instead of going through the catcher James Beck, he went over the catcher. Kownacki dived over the catcher, who was bending down to catch the ball. Kownacki's hand touched home base as he flipped over the catcher.
The Iona manager argued the call saying that Beck actually tagged Kownacki. But watching the Brian Kownacki Flip Video, it's pretty clear that Kownacki got enough hang time to avoid getting touched.
The Fordham flip, as it's best dubbed, was part of a nine-run rally that gave Fordham a 12-9 win. With the win improves to a 13-22 record.
WFUV announcer Gregg Caserta referred to the Brian Kownacki as a circus slide and a "tilt-a-whirl."
