BC AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME: By Brian Zelley
The BC Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame is taking shape with the help of some volunteers from current and past eras of amateur boxing in British Columbia. At the present time, a list of potential inductees is being prepared. As of today, thirty names have been submitted which range from former Vancouver Sun member William (Billy) J. Finlay, to some past boxers that have competed in International tournaments from Olympic boxers such as Dick Findlay and Fred Desrosiers and stars of the sixties such as Freddy Fuller and Frank Scott. Others listed include coaches such as Elio Ius or all rounders such as Stanley F. Smith.
It is hoped that up to 100 names will be submitted before the selection process takes place with the official actual announcement to take place between December 25 to 31st. As this will be the first induction it is hoped that seven to ten names will be selected from boxers, coaches, officials, club and teams.

THE 17 BULDERS
It is expected that the list of 17 builders will be reduced in numbers by July 30th.
Some of those that are expected to move forward for a vote by the end of August include some top picks Dave Brown, Elio Ius, Fred Fuller, George Shiels, Pat O'Reilly, Rick Brough, Stan Smith, and Tommy Paonessa. But a few more could still make the July 30th. selection.
The eight names listed as moving forward have all had an interesting and active role in the sport of boxing. Likely, the most high profile news story was DAVE BROWN serving as the referee for the 1972 MUHAMMAD ALI - GEORGE CHUVALO fight in Vancouver.

HOWARD CURLING - Another one of the 17 to be selected for the next vote.
For boxing folk on Vancouver Island, he is remembered by some for his involvement in the success of amateur boxing in the Fifties, Seventies and Eighties. In 1976, he was the key person in Victoria behind the organization of a International tournament between the best junior BC boxers and a team of British Schoolboys that took place in Victoria during June of that year. For his involvement, he was recognized by the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association and received a Certificate of Outstanding Merit for contributing to the success of Amateur Boxing in British Columbia.

I was wondering if anybody has access to archives from historic BC boxing championships? My grandfather, Denis Labossiere, won the golden gloves in 1949 (I believe). I would like to dig up some history on this if anybody can point me in the right direction. Sorry to hear about Tommy Paonessa.

DENIS LABOSSIERE - 1949 GOLDEN GLOVES CHAMPION
THE TENTH BC GOLDEN GLOVES TOURNAMENT
Looking back it was an important year for BC Amateur boxing.
The year was to close out the Forties era and recognize the tenth Golden Gloves tournament. One champion from 1948 would return to move-up a weight division and be victorious and that lone warrior was LEN WALTERS. but there would be a new batch of champions such as
Len Kupchak, Denis LEBOSSIERE, Don Codville, Earl Cook
Leo Logan, Bill Misslebrook and Joe Ellison.
In closing out the first ten years, there are plenty of names to go around from various locations. A sample of names include NORMAN DELAIRE, JACKIE TURNER, KENNY LINDSAY, VIC MURDOCH, IZZIE RUBIN, ALAN DUNN, PHIL VICKERY, SAMMY MAY, JIMMY CROOK, FRANK & STAN ALMOND, and JACK HAMILTON and the 1949 achievement of the man called DENIS LEBOSSIERE.

THE DENIS LABOSSIERE and TOMMY PAONESSA Connection
after the War Years, the veteran DENIS decided to turn to boxing and would step inside a gym along East Hstings. Over time, there had been a number of boxing clubs along Hastings from main nd hstings to the old Hastings Community Centre. The club, the one they called DENIS LABOSSIERE would pick the Western Sports Centre which had somewhat of history. At the time of the arrival of Denis, the head coach happened to be the one they called TOMMY PAONESSA.
The decades rolled by, but boxer and coach still kept in touch, and in recent years DENIS would be one of the guests of an event to celebrate TOMMY PAONESSA. It ssems an extra bonus for PAONESSA was receiving an entry into the CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME. Tommy becoming a boxing legend in Greater Vancouver is due in part to the many amateur boxing who stepped through the doors of the various boxing clubs in Vancouver and North Vancouvrer and one of those boxers would be the featherweight DENIS LABOSSIERE a Golden Gloves champion and Champion of the province of BRITISHCOLUMBIA.

PRELIMINARY RESULTS: by brian w. zelley, founder and administrator for the "British Columbia Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame"
Three of six administrators have indicated acceptance that all 15 names should remain and be part of the core group. Based on the history of other Halls of Fames from "the.RING" magazines decision in the Fifties and the BC SPORTS OF FAME decision in the Sixties it would not be unusual to have 15 names as the core group in year one.
The final decision should be made in a few days.
