Calzaghe wins split decision over Hopkins

Joe Calzaghe split decision over Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas

Judge Ted Gimza scored it 115-112 for Calzaghe. Judge Adelaide Byrd gave it 114-113 to Hopkins. Chuck Giampa favored Calzaghe 116-111.

Notes from Ringside: Round by Round

Round 1: Calzaghe the aggressor. Hopkins drops Calzaghe with a beautiful short right. 10-8 Hopkins.

Round 2: Calzaghe throwing mostly arm punches and is out of his rhythm. Hopkins plays chess. Hopkins very calm, no wasted motion. 10-9 Hopkins.

Round 3: Hopkins lands the cleaner punches inside. Hopkins more effective. Calzaghe is busier but coming up short. 10-9 Hopkins.

Round 4: More of the same. Hopkins landing cleaner, harder shots. Calzaghe more volume. Tough round to judge. 10-9 Calzaghe.

Round 5: Calzaghe busier. Calzaghe starting to be effective with jab. Still no body attack from Hopkins. Could be is undoing. 10-9 Calzaghe.

Round 6: Hopkins not putting out enough offense. Although his defense is subtlety spectacular. Calzaghe begins to razzle dazzle. 10-9 Calzaghe.
