AMATEUR BOXING
Today amateur boxing in Canada is governed by The Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and the various provincial organizations.

A number of Canadian boxers have won Olympic medals such as Lennox Lewis, Dale Walters and Raymond Downey. And many have won medals in other International tournaments. Some names to remember include Harold Mann, Eddie Haddad, Frankie
Scott and many more.

PROFESSIONAL BOXING

Operated under the direction of the Canadian Professional Boxing
Federation.

Over the years Canadians have won a few world titles such as
George Dixon, Tommy Burns and Jimmy McLarnin.

Throughout the decades there have been some excellent Canadian boxers such as Yvon Durelle, Blair Richardson,
George Chuvalo, Al Sparks and Clyde Gray.

In the lonf history of boxing in Canada many world champions have seen action in Canada such as Muhammed Ali, Archie Moore, Bobo Olson and, Todd Morgan,

It's actually Muay Thai. And it's in Phuket, Thailand. Not as violent as I expected, although occasionally the crowd involvement threatened to outshine the event itself.

The fighters are more respectful of each other and box with more spirituality than traditional boxing, and if I had to choose to see another bout, it would be Muay Thai over boxing. Just as long as I had Thai beer and fried chicken to go ;-)

Interesting with the timimg of the mention of Muay Thai, as "The Martlett", The University of Victoria'S independent Newspaper"
recently had a front page story in the January 22, 2009 issue
titled "Students reach for kickboxing titles" by Jonathon Wolsey.

Wolsey stated the kickboxing event is a modified form of Muay Thai boxing. One of the kickboxers was quoted indicating that
"boxing is more about the money...But in Kickboxing, there is
a lot more respect..."- Hal Keisel.

Well, I appreciate Young Hal's fostering an interest in his sport of
kickboxing, but would caution him to be careful in his comments concerning boxing. For instance, in amateur boxing money is a
non issue. Concerning the respect issue, I am sure that respect
can be found in not only kickboxers, bu also amateur and pro
boxers.

The primary bout will feature GABRIEL VARGA.

AMATEUR BOXING in CANADA

A comparison of Canada's performance and participation
in the 1984 and 2008 Olympics would indicate that the sport has gone through a number of stages.

In 1984, the Canadian Olympic Boxing team won three medals.
Medal winners were Dale Walters, Shawn O'Sullivan and Willie deWit. The other boxers did not win medals, but put on a fine performance. Other team members were Lennox Lewis, Rick Duff,
Bill Dunlop, Wayne Gordon, John Kalbhenn, Denis Lambert and
Steve Pagendam. Of those boxers, Lennox Lewis would earn a spot on the 1988 team and win gold.

Throughout Canada, the Eighties proved to be an active decade
in amateur boxing. For instance, in British Columbia, The 1980
would result in the revival of the BC Diamond Belt Tournament
that was a hit in 1967 and 1968. In 1984, there would be a
revival of the Vancouver Island Boxing Championships that
were last held in 1964. The 1980 tournament took place in Victoria while the 1984 event took place in Parksville. Victoria
would also host a 1985 Diamond Belt Tournament.

Of special interest, at the 1985 tournament, Former boxer,
Danny MacDonald who served as the announcer took time to recognize names from the past. Those recognized
were Dale Walters, Jack Snaith, Howard Curling, Don Dornick,
Mike Sartori, Brian Zelley, Paul Calve, Dan Wright, Ian Weir, Harold Handlin, George Armson, Fred Fuller and Bert Lowes.

A look at CANADA's boxing participation and performance in the 2008 Olympics was limited to only one boxer and one bout.
Hopefully, Boxing Canada, the Provincial Associations and every
boxing club across Canada can pick up the broken pieces and
begin to rebuild once again to reach the performance level of
1984 and 1988.

I am looking for information on my grandfather Arthur Henry March, he was in the military in Canada and was a featherweight boxer. I am trying to find a website that would help me find this information. He was in WW11 and was known to fight lightweights. He also had a wooden leg and was known to box in spite of it.  He may not have boxed while in the military.

I would appreciate any help you could give me as I have run out of resources looking for any info on him.

 Thank You

Anne Long ( nee March)
