Candace Parker of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks has given birth to a baby girl. Parker and husband Shelden Williams of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves welcomed a new child who weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.

"Shelden and I are thrilled," Parker said in a release. "This is such a life changing moment for us, we feel blessed to have a healthy and beautiful baby girl."

Parker plans to rejoin the Sparks once the season WNBA season starts in June. Just how quickly Parker can get into game shape remains to be seen.

I just looked up several articles about how quickly after childbirth moms can expect to return to exercise. Many suggest that for women who exercise throughout pregnancy, exercise of some kind can be safely resumed within a week or two -- although at reduced levels of exertion.

Parker is coming off an amazing year. In April, Parker helped the Tennessee Lady Vols win their second consecutive NCAA title. She was then the #1 overall pick in the WNBA draft and went on to be named both the WNBA's Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player, She also won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and was named the AP female athlete of the year.
