John Tavares may have been named NHL Central Scouting’s top rated Ontario Hockey League centre iceman prior to the June NHL entry draft but Brampton Battalion captain and the OHL all-star teams number two centre centre iceman Cody Hodgson wasn’t about to let the Tavares hype stand in his way.

Hodgson lead a team of OHL all-stars past a collection of Russian Juniors with a three goal, one assist performance. OHL Team Captain John Tavares looked to capture all the glory opening the scoring just a minute and forty second into the game. Hodgson quickly answered the Tavares marker with a short-handed goal just under halfway through the first period.

With less than seven second to play in the second period John Tavares severed a 3-2 Russian lead with a power-play goal to send to two sides into the final stanza all knotted up at three.

In the third period with the game on the line Cody Hodgson, the 10th overall pick by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2008 NHL entry draft took matters into his own hands. Two goals in ten minute.

The scorched Russians licked their wounds through the majority of the third period managing no goals on eight shots and a combined eight minutes in the sin bin.

The ADT Canada Russia Challenge is a six game hockey series matching the finest Russian Junior Hockey players against three separate all-star teams representing the three leagues of the CHL, (Canadian Hockey League) the OHL (Ontario Hockey League) the WHL (Western Hockey League) and the QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League)

This year’s edition of the Challenge is already halfway in the books with the Canadian side leading two games to one. The second leg of the OHL feature will be played Monday, November 24th in St. Catherines, Ontario and can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet. The game will likely be another showcase for the OHL’s top two centres Tavares and Hodgson. Now I know these boys are awfully young but if you want to get some kind of idea of just what your in-store for if you should choose to tune in or better yet make the trip to Saint Caty’s to see them play on Monday night. Just think back to those old Jordan Vs Bird McDonald’s commercials. A little game of one ups-man-ship.

Hodgson’s Brampton Battalion teammate Evgeny Grachev tallied his own short-handed goal at 17:25 mark of the first period well another "troop" member, forward Matt Duchene added an assist to the late Hodgson goal to bring the trio’s point total to a whopping six in just one game. No wonder the Battalion have won a franchise high 14 consecutive games.

As of now, it seems like picking Hodgson over Beech has been a better choice.
