St George’s win fixture in 37th Jackie Soccer Tourney

MUSSOORIE: 4 Aug: St George’s College (C) team emerged winners of their league fixture by defeating Rauthan Sports Club (B) by a solitary goal amidst cheers of “Into the D Manor House” from the crowd watching the game in the ongoing 37th Jackie Memorial Soccer tournament, today.
The goal was scored by Shivam Anand in the dying minutes of the first half. Rauthan’s players tried their utmost to level the score but to no avail. The St George’s defence was rock solid and diffused all the attacks made by the opponents.
The misty weather also dampened the prospects of Rauthan Sports Club in the second half as the visibility became very poor. The coach of the St Georges team, Mr Thapa, was delighted with the result of today’s game but added that it was a tough road ahead for the boys.
Bro Thomas Muldowney recounted the history of the Jackie Memorial Soccer Tournament. He said, “The soccer tournament was introduced in 1972 in the memory of an old pupil of the school,  the late Jitendra Gupta (Jackie), a Christian student who died in a drowning accident while he was training at the IMA as a Gentleman Cadet. He added further that Jackie’s elder brother, a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, was martyred in the 1971 war in Bangladesh the same year. The mother of both children was Headmistress in Oak Grove School, Jharipani. Both boys had failed in Oak Grove, earlier, so she had requested the Principal of St George’s College at that time to admit her sons.”
