Charlie Weis Billboard Photo: Tom Reynolds, ND Alum, Paid For It?
Some Notre Dame fans seem to have a pretty good sense of humor. That's why some Fighting Irish fans paid to have a billboard make a rather pointed jab at Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis.
So what did the Charlie Weis billboard say? The billboard reads, “Best wishes to Charlie Weis in the 5th year of his college coaching internship. — Linebacker Alumni."
The Charlie Weis billboard is located near the Linebacker Inn at the intersection of Edison Road and State Road 23. The owners of the Linebacker Inn, however, say they had nothing to do with it.
There are some reports that Tom Reynolds, a former Notre Dame linebacker, paid for the billboard.
hat billboard has since been attributed to former player Tom Reynolds, a seldom-used reserve linebacker in the late 1960s under Ara Parseghian.
So who is this Tom Reynolds of Notre Dame? Whoever he is, he sounds scrappy. This New York Daily News story talks about Tom Reynolds, a former Notre Dame linebacker, who chased a robber from his hotel while completely nude. Sounds like a guy who might be feisty enough to publicly call out Charlie Weis.
For many passing motorists, the billboard was good for a chuckle. Others, however, don't find it funny.
“And now they put this up on this end of the campus with the home opener coming up and you have recruits coming in and the team is trying to get motivated,” one fan told WSBT News.
As for Weis himself, he seems to have a pretty good sense of humor when it comes to the Charlie Weis billboard.
"Everything was great until the last word," he said of the sign less than a mile from his office. "So tell them thanks a lot for wishing me best wishes."
