An Ugly Scene Took Place at the End of a Chinese Basketball League Playoff Game. Charles Gaines Punched Out Opponent Du Feng, Which Nearly Set Off a Riot in the Stadium. Here is the Video

A playoff game in China's basketball league was marred by an ugly on-court attack. Charles Gaines of Xinjiang Guanghui viciously punched Guangdong forward Du Feng after Guandong won the game 85-80.

Charles Gaines punched Du Feng in the face and appeared to knock him out cold.

What Caused the Charles Gaines Attack?

The two players were fighting for a rebound when Du reportedly headbutted Gaines. Charles Gaines angrily punched Du who fell to the floor as time ran out.

After the Charles Gaines punch, both teams had to be escorted to their locker rooms as angry fans threw bottles onto the court. Gaines reportedly had to leave the arena surrounded by a huge throng of police officers.

Gaines ugly punch overshadowed an excellent performance. Gaines finished the game with a the team-high 19 points and 17 rebounds. He will likely face suspension for punching Du Feng.

Who is Charles Gaines?

Gaines is a former Southern Mississippi star who played briefly with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs. In addition to his time in China, Gaines has played professional basketball in Italy, France, Spain, Turkey and Israel.

Shades of Kermit Washington

For some, the Charles Gaines punch video is a reminder of the infamous 1977 incident between Kermit Washington and Rudy Tomjanovich. During a scuffle at a Los Angeles Lakers-Houston Rockets game, Washington punched Tomjanovich, breaking Rudy T's face and leaving him unconscious in a pool of his own blood. Reports after the fact stated that Tomjanovich nearly died on the court.

Tomjanovich later sued the Los Angeles Lakers for more than $3 million. He went on to the coach the Houston Rockets to two NBA titles.

I know Charles personally and I know that he had to be provoked . He is a quiet person and very slow to anger. This guy Du  Feng probably brought this on his self. Although there should be good sportsmanship in all sports sometimes when put in a situation your instincts takes over and you just react without thought. I afraid this is one of those times.

Since you know him "personally" its ok?  Have you heard of this saying, "sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt me".  Nobody should ever get punched on the field or court, unless its hockey.  I wish you had been Du Feng with a mask on, so when your "buddy" knocked you out, you might see that regardless how nice he is, he was overreacted like a spoiled brat.

First of all, I would like to ask the reporter what video is he watching.  That had nothing to do with sticks and stones will break my bones.  I would advise you to get some glasses because you definitely can't see what's going on here.  Remove the plank that is in your eye before you judge someone else falsely.  This Du Feng guy have very poor sportsmanship and got what he deserved.  Du Feng was constantly in Charles face and playing dirty. If you ask me personally, this was a set-up to get the best player out the game so they would have a better chance of winning. Check Charles track record and it speaks for itself. Charles was put there for God's plan and purpose and nothing you do or say will hinder God's plan for Charles life. Tell me Mr. Reporter how would you react if someone head-butted you.  You guys reported that Charles allegedly was headbutted, this was not alleged, it's in color that he headbutted him. No weapon formed against Charles will prosper. This humble, meek young man of God was provoked and pushed to his limits. I think you need to go back to reporting school because you missed the most important part. When you report a story, report the truth with facts to back up what you are reporting. Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you. If you don't want anyone to tarnish your character, please stop trying to tarnish Charles. The truth will always pervail. I bind every wicked evil lie that come out of your mouth. Stick to the truth.   I thank God that they both apologized to one another and will be able to move forward. May the best team win.

I know Charles personally as well and he is the most laid back guy ever. The report clearly says dude headbutted Charles so there you go... I played overseas too, those cats will do anything to provoke American players..

Come on Jon!  Get your facts straight.  This has little to do with the Kermit W – Rudy T punch.  First of all, Kermit was trained as a boxer when he was younger.  Secondly, Kermit was trying to prevent a fight between Kareem and Kevin Kunnert of the Rockets.  Kunnert hit Kermit after Kermit restrained him.  Kermit struck Kunnert while Kareem held Kunnert.  Rudy T came running at Kermit from the side.  Kermit saw a flash coming at him in his peripheral view.  Kermit did what any trained boxer would have done:  He wheeled and hit Rudy.  The sound of the hit and the violence of the hit were stunning.  Thus, there is very little or no similarity to this incident.  I am sure that you could find a Bill Laimbeer, Ron Artest, Maurice Lucas, Latrell Sprewell or Jim Luscutoff incident with a stronger correlation.   I saw the video, Du Feng headbutted Charles Gaines.  Gaines hit Du in the side of the head with his open hand.  He hit him hard.  That is a very normal reaction by a professional basketball player.  Nothing unusual here, other than there is latent racism waiting to explode in China.  I am not saying that Du had racial intent.  But I believe that a number of fans did.   On further thought, Kermit has nothing to do with this story.  Leave him alone and try to do a better job of reporting what actually happened in the Gaines-Du incident.

Kelster, were you born that way or does it take years of practice to achieve that state of enlightenment.  After watching the video, I was thinking Mr Feng was a jerk and Mr Gaines was showing restraint with his shove to face.  Now I see that Mr Feng was simply leaning forward to touch foreheads with Mr Gaines in a display of serenity.  I also thought Mr Feng was flopping to the floor in a lame attempt to benefit from the confrontation he had initiated.  I was probably wrong there too - now, based on your thoughtful commentary I believe he was simply reclining in a meditative state.  I hear that is popular in China...

Comparing this to the Rudy T punch is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen in a basketball article. Pathetic analogy.
