The City of Denver Proclaims NBHHCM 2K11 to Honor the NBA at 65
The City of Denver home to the Denver Nuggets became the first of the four former ABA (American Basketball Association) franchise team cities of the NBA/ABA merger of 1976 to proclaim this upcoming June as NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month).
The NBHHCM 2K11 historical Proclamation was signed by the City of Denver's Mayor Guillermo V. Vidal to honor the 65th Anniversary of the NBA being founded, and the 35th Anniversary of the NBA/ABA merger of 1976.
The NBA was founded as the BAA (Basketball Association of America) on June 6, 1946 in New York City as an 11-team league. The 1949 merger with NBL (National Basketball League) led to the league being renamed to the current National Basketball Association. June 6, 2011 marks the 65th Anniversary of the day the league was founded.
The ABA was founded in 1967 as a 11-team league to rival the NBA. The league announced on June 17, 1976 after a nine-year existence that they had agreed to merge four of the remaining six teams with more established NBA. June 17, 2011 will be the 35th Anniversary date of the merger.
The NBA being founded, and the announcement of the NBA/ABA merger are 11-days apart as both have monumental anniversaries to be celebrated during the year 2011.
The Denver Nuggets is one of 3 former ABA teams that are contending in this years NBA Playoffs. The other two teams are the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs. The New Jersey Nets the fourth former ABA franchise didn't qualify for the post-season.
The Spurs finished with the 2010-11 season with the second best record in the league at 61-21. The Spurs are the only former ABA team to win an NBA Championship (4).
NBHHCM was first proclaimed in 2009 (Baltimore, MD) to honor the 25th Anniversary of the basketball & hip-hop culture fusion era born in 1984 that is known today as The "Dunkadelic-Era" In America.
June was selected as the official month of observance. The NBHHCM Foundation will honor major events and anniversaries each year during the month of June associated with hoops and hip-hop.
