No one is sure yet whether the noise in the stadium yeterday was truly from the fans but the rumor mills are spinning. Yesterday's football game between the Colts and Patriots was historic and perhaps the most anticipated game of the decade. For those who don't know the Patriots won 24 to 20. Throughout the game commentators repeatedly referred to the loudness of the crowd when New England had possession and the quiet when Indianapolis had possession. The significance being that it was harder for Tom Brady, the famed quarterback of the Patriots, to call his audibles and easy for Payton Manning. Some are now speculating that what thought to be a well trained and passionate crowd was fake noise.

The NFL stated late last night that they do not suspect the Colts of artificially filling the stadium with noise. CBS stated that the sound heard on the tapes was a technical problem experienced by in their production truck.

A day after some unusual sounds were heard during the Colts-Patriots broadcast Sunday, the NFL issued a statement saying what sounded like simulated crowd noise was actually created by the CBS production crew, not the Colts.

"CBS has informed us that the unusual audio moment heard by fans during the Patriots-Colts game was the result of tape feedback in the CBS production truck and was isolated to the CBS broadcast," the league said. "It was in no way related to any sound within the stadium and could not be heard in the stadium."

See here for a video of the section of the game under discussion and here for audio only to judge for your self. Comment below and let everyone know what you think. Keep in mind the audio and video files could have been doctored themselves first hand accounts of the game will be the most telling.

PRO FOOTBALL TALK questions the authenticity of the noise that came from the RCA Dome crowd. The site supplies this audio clip from the CBS broadcast for judgement.

Near the end, you notice some repeating reverb coming from the Indianapolis faithful. The background sound then shuts off, and the crowd sounds a whole lot quieter.

The accusations have spurred the NFL to investigate.

The NFL is looking into allegations that the Indianapolis Colts piped in noise during the game Sunday between the Colts and the Patriots. The charge comes after Patriots President Jonathan Kraft became the latest NFL team executive to accuse the Colts of the distracting tactic that is against the rules.

"We're aware of it and we're looking into it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "It may just be the TV feed from CBS, but we're checking it out."

Observers at the game said there seemed to be a "skip" in the sound during the game Sunday, which the Patriots won 24-20. That might confirm the long-held suspicion among many people in the NFL that the Colts play loud crowd noise to help distract opponents when the other team is on offense.

ryan nadel, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic.

The game was on in the background when I was at the bar yesterday, I remember the announcer saying something about how he's never heard a crowd like that. I guess he spoke more thruthfully than he knew.

We do have to keep in mind tha the audio file I link to could be doctored.

I was there and the sound is real. We are well-trained and passionate!

Each year articles in the Boston Globe refer to the noise in the Dome and how the Pats practice differently to prepare for it.  I find it hard to believe that if Tony Dungy knew of it, he would go along.

ryan nadel, good stuff.

I wonder if people think this is less bad, as bad, or worse than the Patriots having people taking video on the field at a previous game this season? Of course the Colts may have done nothing and this will prove to be a moot point, but it's interesting nonetheless.

ryan, very interesting, I will be checking back to see what the final call is regarding the noise.  This is a good story to open discussion.

Considering this is not the first team to be accused of this (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/285932_noise21.html) I find it odd that the coaches would be the ones who would comment on whether or not it was actually occuring.  If a team was doing this for visiting opponents what incentive would the team have of telling their coach, one of the most public and media-accessible faces of the organization, that they were indeed doing it?  Shouldn't the stadium sound crews be on the record?

The sound booths at stadiums should be open to NFL security or at the very least the NFL should be able to place microphones in front of speakers to determine if sound is being pumped in for all 32 teams.

Good story.
