Cypress Mountain Snow Report Jan 2010: Snow and Hay Being Laid
The Cypress Mountain Snow Report for January 2010 is not looking good for the February 12th start of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
As Vancouver has suffered one of the warmest Januarys on record, Cypress Mountain, where some of the snowboarding and freestyle skiing events are taking place, does not have enough snow and the Olympic organizers are now working harder than ever to help correct the problem.
Snow is currently being pushed down from Collins, Hutch and Cat Track by a team of up to eight SnowCats to a staging area on Easy Rider. This stockpile of snow is being trucked to the Freestyle Finish Area where it is being pushed up to supplement the snow on the Moguls Course.
Bales of hay are also being brought from Parking Lot 3 to be used as backing for the snow and to provide more of a base.
There were reports that some of the events at Cypress were going to be moved to other locations due to lack of snow, but VANOC has denied these reports.
"The work at Cypress is progressing very well, despite the difficult circumstances and there is certainly no consideration of discussing moving the freestyle and snowboard competitions to another resort," Lewis told QMI Agency.
Cypress Mountain has a relatively low elevation at just 910m, and it had to close to the public three weeks ago to preserve any natural snow they have.
