Dallas Stars Show Avery the Door
Sean Avery did his time for his off-side comment he made in Calgary, but 6 games later the team does not want him back. Both players and management feel that his return would not be in the best interest for either party.
"The message here is: no distractions," Stars co-general manager Brett Hull said in a statement. "Sean can focus on resolving his personal issues and the Stars will have closure on this episode. The team needs to put its energies into winning."
Hull and Avery used to be teammates on the Detroit Red Wings and Hull was a major supporter of bring Avery to Dallas over the summer. Hull stated that he thought Avery would add something to the locker room that was missing, but clearly he misjudged Sean and it just didn't work. So what can the Stars do with Avery? They can put him on waivers and send him to the AHL or Europe, the latter would require Avery's permission. They could put him on waivers, send him to the minors and bring him back on re-entry waivers. Or they could send him to the minors for the rest of the season, put him on waivers and buy back 2/3 of his remaining contract at double the term.
Avery has been in a 10 day anger management program as required by the league and it may be extended depending on the results. As for trades, Dallas acquired forward Brian Sutherby from Anaheim who has played for both Anaheim and Washingto. In this time he recorded 29 goals and 39 assists.

Bettman should really be worried about the guys putting elbows into the backs of other guys heads. Suspending a guy for commenting on his ex-girlfriend? That's dumber than what came out of Avery's mouth. The team is made about him saying things about an ex-girlfriend too, but don't go to their web site without stopping by to see the Planet Tan Ice Girls and then link to the True dating site that invites you to "Stop. Stare. Flirt." Way to set the example guys!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Avery's and think what he said was ust about as dumb as you could get, but suspending a guy for 6 games and then taking him off the team?

Perhaps the best article yet on the Avery subject with this great quote:
"Avery was guilty of hockey's deadliest sin: being a lousy teammate."
