Just like the JFK conspiracy, the story of the Tiger Woods fart thickens. Just as there may have been a second shooter on the grassy knoll, there may have been a second farter. Some websites are reporting that the man who dealt it was not Tiger Woods, but CBS reporter David Feherty.

According to one report, CBS has told celebrity news website TMZ.com that the culprit was not Woods, leading some to speculate that it may in fact have been on-course reporter David Feherty.

The fact that the Tiger Woods fart has lingered in the air as long as it has is a source of wonder to many media observers. It's hard to believe that CBS and PGA executives have been forced to comment on Tiger Woods passing gas. It's even harder to believe that a reporter like David Feherty has gotten himself entangled in the Fart Heard 'Round the World.

It could just be that the Tiger Woods fart story--or "Fartgate" as some have called it--has gained attention because August is a notoriously slow news month. Or it could be that the fart shows just how far the media and the blogosphere has sunk.

Blame the blogs, of course. (Including us.) But how were we to know that CBS would actually send takedown notices to YouTube, claiming copyright violations against the people who uploaded five second clips of a fart sound? Or that CBS would claim to have investigated the matter and ruled out Eldrick as the culprit? It's a breathtaking display in how to turn a stupid video you wish would go away into a viral smash hit. Not silent equals very deadly.

Everyone is talking now. USA Today. The New York Post. The Chicago Sun-Times. The Detroit Free Press has two stories about it! (Yet, somehow it didn't end up on SportsCenter's "Blog Buzz" today. Go figure.) Who says sports journalism is dying?
