David Thompson Basketball Player Picked for NBA Hall of Fame Host
Basketball player David Thompson has been selected by basketball great Michael Jordan as his choice for the host of his induction into the NBA Hall of Fame. Michael Jordan's choice of David Thompson comes as a surprise to many who expected him to select one of his former coaches; either Phil Jackson or Dean Smith. Michael Jordan defends his choice of David Thompson by explaining that Thompson was a "local hero" to him.
Like Michael Jordan, David Thompson played college basketball at the University of North Carolina and led the Wolfpack to its first ever NCAA championship in 1974. He went on to play professionaly for the Denver Nuggets and the Seattle SuperSonics. Known for his signature 48-inch vertical leap, David Thompson was nicknamed "Skywalker." In 1978 he became the highest paid NBA athlete to that point with a $4-million, 5-year contract.
David Thompson, though a great basketball player in his own right, is a surprise choice. Most felt either Jordan's CHI coach Phil Jackson or former coach Dean Smith were the front-runners in the list of potential hosts to Jordan's induction.
David Thompson, although he spent a great deal of his career in the ABA, prior to the ABA - NBA merger, was a great basketball player. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame himself in 1996.
