Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag will walk out together once again, after doing so for India during the World Cup, but this time it will only be for the toss. It might seem a tad weird to see the India's dynamic opening combo split down the middle, but that is the reality of the IPL.

Unlike in the past when on paper Delhi were considered to be at par with Mumbai in terms of team strength though, this time Mumbai go in as clear favourites.

 Teams

Delhi Daredevils

The auctions have left Delhi looking like a completely different team, with only Virender Sehwag and David Warner being the familiar faces along with Andrew McDonald and Umesh Yadav to a lesser extent. Amongst the prominent overseas players in the squad, apart from Warner and McDonald are James Hopes, Morne Morkel, Colin Ingram and Roelof van der Merwe. Delhi have also gone in for an array of past and present Indian medium-pacers with Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar and Ashok Dinda alongwith Umesh Yadav. Given that they have many Indian medium pacers, the quick Morne Morkel might miss out, which would be very unfortunate since Morkel could be a potential game changer. However, Delhi will need to strengthen their batting and spin bowling and thus Warner, Hopes, Ingram and van der Merwe are more likely to lend balance to the side. The opening combination of Warner and Sehwag is a mouth-watering one to have, but on the flip-side if both fall early - as they do sometimes - then it will put great pressure on the middle order.

Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians are, without a doubt, the strongest team in the IPL. True, the Twenty20 format is more prone to vagaries than any other, but in spite of that, it will be very surprising indeed if Mumbai fail to be in the top four at the end of the league stage. Have a look at the men who are certain to make the eleven for Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Andrew Symonds, Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh. Off 11 players, when you have 6 who are capable of single-handedly winning you matches you are already formidable. Their fourth overseas player will be from among Aiden Blizzard, Clint McKay, James Franklin or Davy Jacobs. Each one of those is a quality player by himself. Consider the Indian support cast: Munaf Patel, Ambati Rayudu, R Sathish, T Suman, Dhawal Kulkarni. There doesn't seem to be a weak link in the Mumbai line-up. Forget making it to the top four in the League stage, if you are a betting man, put your money on Mumbai making the final. Who Sachin Tendulkar picks as part of the final eleven will be interesting.

Watch out for

Andrew Symonds versus Harbhajan Singh. They are probably last on each others Christmas Cards list, but they will have to find a way to co-exist peacefully somehow for the duration of the IPL. If there is one thing that could derail Mumbai it is inter-team warfar. Bhajji and Symmo don't have to become fast friends - that would be unlikely. All that will be required of them is that they act professional and get on with the job on the field. The bets are open on whether that will happen or not!

Head to Head

The head to head between Delhi and Mumbai is dead even. Both have played 6 matches and won 3 each.

Verdict

It will require a Virender Sehwag special to derail Mumbai from making a winning start. He is among the few men in world cricket who can make an entire opposition irrelevant.
