Dennis Rodman "Tattoo Godfather of the NBA" & NBHHCM 2K11
Dennis Rodman was recently told that he would be inducted into the Nasmith Basketball Hall-of-Fame. He was a fierce competitor that won 5 NBA Championships during his playing career 3 with the Chicago Bulls (1996-98), and 2 with the Detroit Pistons (1989-90).
His title as "Tattoo Godfather of the NBA" will be further popularized as the NBA turns 65 this June 6, 2011 during NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month).
Rodman was always colorful either with his hair or tattoos or both. Dennis always the spectacle when he stepped on an NBA floor. He would dive for loose balls. Kick his legs in the air after snatching his 17th, 18th, or 20th rebound. He even made taking off his jersey and giving it to fans a show.
He has left a legendary mark that has been copied by some of the best past and current players of the last 15-years when it comes to the marks of ink on their bodies.
Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Chris Andersen, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Stephon Marbury, Kenyon Martin, Stephen Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal, Amare Stoudemire, J.R. Smith, Jason Williams, and Rasheed Wallace are a few of the NBA star players of the current generation that sport multiple tattoos.
Allen Iverson the poster-boy of hoops and hip-hop culture for over a decade was the 'Tattoo Prince of the NBA." He had taken the mantle from Rodman and combined it with more of a hip-hop influence that he copied from Tupac Shakur. Iverson has said numerous times that Tupac was one of his idols.
LeBron James who was supposed to be the "Next" Michael Jordan looks more like an Allen Iverson than Jordan. James has multiple tattoos and is connected to the hip-hop culture just as Iverson.
LeBron wore NY Yankees caps when he played in Cleveland. Iverson was seen on an occasion or two wearing a Yankees cap when he played for the Philadelphia 76ers. James has been a good-friend to hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, and has been mentioned in his rap songs various times.
Derrick Rose the odds-on-favorite to be named the 2011 NBA MVP has a hip-hop style game like Iverson, and he too has tattoos.
Hip-hop stars like Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Pharrell, Rick Ross, The Game, and 50-Cent are inked out with body art and that all came after Tupac and Dennis Rodman.
Tupac became infamous for his "Thug Life" tattoo, and that has increased the legend of the late rap icon.
Dennis Rodman will soon be in the Hall of Fame. He will be the first of many that will enter the Hall with a few tats to go along with some legendary stats.
