Denver Becomes the 4th US City to Proclaim NBHHCM 2010
The City of Denver, Colorado became the 5th US city to proclaim the basketball and hip-hop culture fusion celebration month (June).
NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) www.NBHHCM.org was created in January 2009 when its Founder Derrick E. Vaughan wanted to honor the 25th Anniversary (1984-2009) of the basketball & hip-hop culture fusion time-period born in 1984 that is known today as The "Dunkadelic-Era" In America, 1984-Present.
There is no doubt that basketball and hip-hop go hand-in-hand. The 2 have strong roots in urban America where hip-hop (rap music) is the vibe of the city street and basketball is the game of that same city street.
Shaquille O'Neal back in 1992 when he was the 1st pick of the NBA Draft came into the league rapping and break dancing. When then veteran Isiah Thomas met Shaq at the 1993 All-Star Game and saw the 20-year old man-child rapping and breaking he said to teammate Joe Dumars "we are getting old Joe things are going to change with this new crop of players."
That same year the Notorious B.I.G. released his debut album "Ready to Die". One of the songs from the album is titled "Things Done Changed." He makes reference to the game of drugs and the game of basketball,
If I wasn't in the rap game
I'd probably have a key knee deep in the crack game
Because the streets is a short stop
Either you're slingin crack rock or you got a wicked jumpshot.
Carmelo Anthony the 25-year old superstar of the Denver Nuggets was born May 29, 1984. 1984 was the birth-year of The "Dunkadelic-Era." Carmelo like LeBron James (born December 30, 1984), Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, and Derrick Rose are young new players that personify the hoops and hip-hop culture that has become part of their everyday lives.
Vaughan says, "he wants the NBBHHCM celebration to be about fun and to educate the youth on how hoops and hip-hop were formed together." The NBHHCM Foundation is also promoting during the month of June its "Read to Succeed" Program. The Read to Succeed is an attempt to get more kids from K-12 to obtain library cards and improve their reading skills.
Hip-Hop pioneer Busy Bee said it best at last years first NBHHCM 2009 celebration Tip-off in Baltimore," rap is something that you do, hip-hop is something that you live." Now all of America can celebrate the fusion of hoops and hip-hop. The City of Denver has now signed a Proclamation proclaiming June 2010 NBHHCM for its city and citizens.
