The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office released a statement that cause of death was “mixed alcohol and oxycodone toxicity.” Derek Boogaard was determined to have died accidentally. Oxycodone is a powerful (and addictive) prescription painkiller.

Derek Boogaard was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment on May 13, but the exact time of death could not be determined.

The Boston University School of Medicine will examine Derek Boogaard's brain for signs of degenerative disease due to repeated brain trauma.
