Last night at Madison Square Garden in New York City Derrick Rose cemented his case as the 2011 NBA MVP leading the Chicago Bulls to a 103-90 victory over the New York Knicks on the NBA's biggest stage.

Rose is one of the new NBA star-players that personify the hoops and hip-hop culture that was made popular over the past 15-20 years by Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, Shaquille O'Neal, Carmelo Anthony, and LeBron James.

NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) was first proclaimed in June 2009 by former City of Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. Rose was not born in June. He was born on October 4, 1988. Derrick shares the same birthday as hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons (October 4, 1957). The two will make NBHHCM 2K11 history when Rose is awarded the NBA MVP Award this upcoming June. It will be the first time that an NBA MVP and hip-hop mogul share the same birthday.

Simmons has been given the title "Godfather of Hip-Hop"

Russell is the co-founder of the most well-known hip-hop label of all-time Def Jam Recordings. Def Jam was founded in 1984 in a New York University dorm room by Simmons and music producer Rick Rubin.

New York is the Capital to the "Hoops and Hip-Hop Culture". Rose will now battle Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James for the crown as the #1 NBA Player to the "Hoops and Hip-Hop Culture."

1988 has been considered the greatest-year for basketball and hip-hop. Hip-Hop became an artists category for the first time at the American Music Awards. Hip-Hop artists released a variety of albums that became commercially successful that year. Hip-Hop had arrived and in a big way.

23-years ago superstar guard Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls won his first of 5 NBA MVP's. Jordan was also selected as the 1988 Defensive Player of the Year. Rose on October 4, 2011 will be celebrating his 23rd birthday.

Derrick Rose has risen to superstar status and he will carry the NBA icon-star status of hoops and hip-hop culture hero just like Shaq, KG, Melo, LeBron, and the #1 player all-time to the culture some guy nicknamed "The Answer."
