Detroit Marathon Deaths: Dan Langdon, Rick Brown, Jon Fenlon
The 2009 Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon took place Oct. 16. Nick Stanko of Haslett won the Detroit Marathon finished with a time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 23 seconds. Stanko was closely followed by second place finisher Chad Johnson. Sadly, three Detroit Marathon deaths overshadowed the event, as Daniel Langdon, Rick Brown and Jon Fenlon collapsed during the run.
The women's category was won by 41-year-old Sarah Plaxton. The Detroit Marathon marked her 52nd marathon.
On a sad note, three Detroit Marathon participants died during the Detroit Marathon. Two of the men collapsed at the finish line while another collapsed at the 12 mile mark at a fluid station. All three men were pronounced dead at local hospitals.
The first man to collapse was Daniel Langdon, 36, of Laingsburg, at about 9:02 a.m., said Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the Detroit Media Partnership. Langdon was on Michigan Avenue, between the 11- and 12-mile markers.
Rick Brown, 65, of Marietta, Ohio, collapsed at 9:17 a.m., near where Langdon went down.
And Jon Fenlon, 26, of Waterford collapsed at about 9:18 a.m., just after finishing the half-marathon in 1:53:37.

I see there is mention of the first male runner and first female funner to cross the finish line....what about the first hand-cyclist to cross the finish line? The ACTUAL first person to cross the finish line!

Did anyone see the runner who ran without shoes today? I saw him at Michigan Ave and Cass. Wow...how did he run bare feet.

I ran behind the Bare Foot Bandit. Bare foot running is all the craze right now. Read the book Born to Run and you will know why and how.
