Detroit Shock Moving to Tulsa: WNBA Team Plans to Move to OKLA
It appears as if the WNBA's Detroit Shock are moving to Tulsa, Okla. A group of investors led by Bill Cameron and David Box plan to buy an WNBA team by the end of the month and move it to Oklahoma. They had previously announced that they wanted former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson to coach the new team in Tulsa.
The Detroit Shock move comes after the team had reached the Eastern Conference Finals this season. The Shock have regularly been a playoff team, and won the WNBA championship in 2003, 2006, and 2008.
Despite their on-court success, the Detroit Shock were never a huge box-office draw in a state filled with several popular pro and college sports teams. The team was coached by former Detroit basketball greats like Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn and featured great WNBA players like Sheri Sam, Swin Cash, and Deanna Nolan. Still, the team never managed to attract big crowds to Detroit Shock games.
Tulsa investors Bill Cameron and Davis Box are part owners of the Tulsa Talons of arenafootball2 league and Cameron is also part owner of the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder.
