Dock Ellis' No-hitter on LSD in 1970
Dock Ellis' LSD induced no-hitter in 1970 is once again a topic of conversation thanks to No Mas' incredible new animated video about the subject. Ellis' body was filled with a cocktail of LSD, marijuana, greenies, alcohol and god knows what else when he threw a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the San Diego Padres.
His no-hitter on June 12, 1970, however, almost didn't happen because Ellis' was on one of his drug infused trips in Los Angeles. In his mind, it was still Thursday, when in reality, it was already Friday, the day he was scheduled to pitch. Ellis had to drive from Los Angeles to San Diego on the day of June 12th while still high on drugs to make it in time for his start on the first game of a double header. Ellis was still stoned during the game, and his teammates could see it in his eyes.
The hardest part was between innings. He was sure his teammates knew something was up. They had all been acting strange since the game began. Solution: Do not look at teammates.
Ellis was wild that day, giving up 8 walks, and a hit by pitch.
Big thanks to Can't Stop The Bleeding, where I spotted this story about Dock Ellis.

Frank, have you read Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe, the story of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters and the whole Haight-Ashbury scene?
