Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth has begun serving a 30-day jail sentence Tuesday for drunken accident that killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes.
The 28-year-old NFL player could have faced as much as 15 years behind bars but received a relatively light sentence because he cooperated with authorities and Reyes's family decided not to pursue to matter thoroughly so they could get on with their lives.
Stallworth reached a confidential financial settlement with Reyes's family.
One writer has noted that Stallworth will spend much less time in jail than other prominent athletes charged with serious crimes.
There's a good chance that Stallworth will serve less jail time than both Michael Vick, Plaxico Burress, Marion Jones, Pete Rose and Jamal Lewis. Not to minimize the crimes of the people on that list, but none of them killed anybody. Stallworth's crime was an accident, but an accident that was set in motion by an illegal action.

You do know Andrew Thomas Gallo was driving under the influence, ran a red light, killed three people, seriously injured a fourth, and then tried to flee the scene, right? On top of that he had prior DUI arrests.
I'm not trying to justify Stallworth's sentence, but comparing the two isn't exactly apples to apples.

Can you say outraged? Mike Vick got a stiffer sentence over some dogs. This guy killed a human being. I though murder or manslaughter is a crime. So he committed a crime while driving toxicated, which is also a crime. THE AMERICAN JUSTICE SYSTEM!

Well, as they say, money talks and BS walks.
Clearly the family thought the financial settlement was more important that justice.
Are we really that surprised that our justice system is for sale...

Thomas Gallo convicted of killing Nick Adenhart a pitcher for the Angels is facing 55 years to life for DUI manslaughter. Why the hell isn't Stallworth facing anything remotely resembling that sentence. When a drunken professional athlete kills your everyday person he gets 30 days, but when your everyday person kills a professional athlete he could get life. I am crazy or is there something really wrong with our justice system?

Don't forget INTENT folks. Stallworth's situation was an ACCIDENT, not saying he shouldn't have gotten a harsher sentence. Vick's situation was deliberate, and he was a repeat offender who lied about it - repeatedly. Quite the sadist, I'd say!

1. The correct term is "intoxicated" 2.The guy ran in front of him like a moron. If I got in trouble for hitting a moron with my car, then I'd be pretty pissed.

I've killed several people while driving drunk and I can honestly tell You that I am very very sorry. The first one I killed cost me 90 days in jail. The second one cost me 60 days. Last year, I accidentally killed a couple just married and that's the one that haunts me the most. I didn't serve any jail time for that one, but I feel just awful about it. However, jail time would not do anything good. I was sober when I killed the married couple.

Getting so intoxicated that he got a DUI wasnt intent enough? Thats just as deliberate as Vick's actions. It may have been an accident but drinking and driving is illegal for a reason.
