NP Rank:
Double Gold for German Dentist
Congratulations to German double gold medalist’s Hinrich "the dentist" Romeike and wonder horse Marius for capturing both the team and individual Eventing competition. A double gold medal is always something special but for Romeike a full-time dentist, who claims to only ride after 7pm, capturing gold must seem surreal.
What is Eventing?
An enduring cross-country event sandwiched between a slice of dressage and a slab of show jumping.
Who?
Eventing is a three-day event for athletes of the equine persuasion and unpleasant men and women with white pants, black knee high boots and funny little protective helmets.
Why?
Unlike most Olympic sports, since the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland both men and women have competed in equestrian events against one and other for a single prize, no handicap or ladies tee in this sport.
Furthermore, with exception to the 1896 (Greece), 1904 (USA) and 1908 (UK) summer Olympic games, equestrian events have been featured in each and every summer Olympic games. That’s twenty-six years of Olympic equine history, still asking why?
Why not.
Where?
The Sha Tin equine facility in Hong, Kong is a state of the art horse conditioning facility with onsite x-ray, ultrasound and emergency medical surgeons. Nowhere in the world, Canada, The United States or even The United Arab Emirate can claim to have a better equine centre then the folk’s at Sha Tin.
Day Three: Eventing
Three gruelling days and an Olympic medal all came down to a final jump, on the final day, for double medal hopeful Megan Jones of Australia, who clipped the final barrier in the individual jumping round of the Eventing session to concede the bronze to Great Britain’s Kristina Cook aboard 10-year-old blue blood Miners Frolic.
Megan Jones and her horse Irish Jester were surely the heart break story of the Beijing 08 Olympic Eventing session, falling to an efficient German team that powered their way’s to a gold medal in the team competition and then narrowly missing the medal podium in the individual competition. At least for Megan heartbreak has a silver lining, second place in the team competition and a little hardware to take back home.

Thank you for this article because you were able to simplify things yet keep them interesting. ( Certainly more interesting then watching at least one of those events). Keep up the excellent work and I look forward to another one.
