"Dunkadelic" the Global Term of Hoops, Hip-Hop, Fashion, Etc...
July 26, 2011- It's been nearly 15-years since the "Dunkadelic" term was created in February 1997 by Derrick E. Vaughan of Baltimore, Maryland. The term created in the U.S. is now becoming a Global one as well.
When you look at the game of basketball there have been plenty of terms, players, and etc. that have come and gone since 1997. In the world of hip-hop "Dunkadelic" is still "Fresh!"
The term first took center stage in 2003 when a pair of sneakers (ATR Dunkadelic) by Reebok hit the streets at the height of the hoops and hip-hop culture fusion era. The basketball shoes were featured in a National TV campaign with hip-hop superstar Jay-Z rapping in the background. NBA stars Allen Iverson, Baron Davis, Steve Francis, Kenyon Martin, & Jalen Rose were in the commercial.
Iverson was a rookie in 1997 when the term was created. On April 16, 2003 Iverson wore the ATR Dunkadelic shoe for the last played NBA game of Michael Jordan's career. Jordan is considered by many as the greatest player ever. Jordan is also the most successful sneaker endorser of all-time.
In that same year of 2003 NBA Street Volume 2 was summarized by G4tv.com its dunkadelic, its phat, its frizzesh. Dunkadelic was the new term on the rise as slam dunk, jam, and stuff were becoming popular terms of the past.
Linda Cohn the legendary anchor of ESPN SportsCenter was the first TV sportscaster to use the term on the air in 2005 (after a spectacular dunk by Kevin Garnett), "Now that's dunkadelic".
During that same time NBA Inside Stuff published the Special Collector's Dunkadelic Issue with Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, and Vince Carter on the cover. The Dec/Jan issue of 2005 was the first time that Kobe and LeBron were featured on a magazine cover together.
David Dupree of the USA Today wrote an article for the 2005 NBA All-Star Game, Showmanship, style highlight NBA's showcase. LeBron James and Vince Carter, "The dunkadelics."
Dunkadelic in late 2005 made it as the headline article title for XBox 2K6: Dunkadelic University.
In February 2007 the Dunkadelic term made it to the White House when the Miami Heat visited then President Bush. The Houston Chronicle titled the article "White House Dunkadelic."
Later that year in October 2007 Chow.com featured an article on the garlic bread sticks at Michael Jordan's Restaurant in New York, "At Michael Jordan's, Dunkadelic Garlic Cheese Stuff."
Next for Dunkadelic in October 2008 was the national headline title for the article review by Game Informer Magazine for NBA 2K9. "NBA 2K9 continues 2K Sports dunkadelic dynasty."
When June 2009 came around Mayor Sheila Dixon became the first U.S. Mayor to honor the 25th Anniversary of the basketball hip-hop culture fusion time period born in 1984 that is known today as The "Dunkadelic-Era" In America with a Proclamation proclaiming June as NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month).
Before the start of the 2009-10 season there was a burger recipe made for new Cleveland Cavalier team-mates LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal the "Bron-N-Shaq Dunkadelic Double Stacked Cheeseburger."
In June 2010 13 of the 29 (44.8%) NBA cities proclaimed June as NBHHCM including major market cities New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Houston, and Atlanta. Baltimore became the first U.S. city to proclaim NBHHCM back-to-back.The State of Maryland became the first U.S. State to proclaim June as NBHHCM. The Proclamations made reference to The "Dunkadelic-Era."
Since 2010 19 of the 29 (65.5%) NBA team cities have proclaimed June as NBHHCM.
Toronto, Canada in 2011 became the first city out of the USA to proclaim June as Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month.
In 2011 Adidas, Nike, and the Jordan Brand have used the "Dunkadelic" term to market their products.
Adidas: A dunkadelic showstopper, the Adidas Forum LT Shorts 2.0 hit the court with handy side pockets, the 3-Stripes on the legs and a comfortable elastic waistband.
Nike: Nike Set Dunkadelic a shirt and top set for infants 3 month's to 3-year old toddlers. The word "Dunkadelic" is written on the front of the shirt.
Jordan Brand: Rock the court in the Jordan; Men's Classic Fleece Pant, dunkadelic style that will keep the stands roaring.
The top 3 and most popular basketball sneaker brands in the world like and use the same dunk term, is this a first.
The Dunkadelic terminology has grown and is seen on websites in Asia, Denmark, England, Germany, and South Africa. The term is truly becoming the universal dunk word around the world. The only problem is that the man who created the term hasn't gotten his respect or notoriety. In the world of hip-hop, I say this from the heart to Derrick E. Vaughan "Respect Due."
