A Fan Attacked Dutch Goalkeeper Esteban During a Game on December 21, 2011. Esteban Ended Up Getting a Red Card For Defending Himself. Huh? Here is the Video

During a Dutch Cup round-of-16 match between host Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, an Ajax fan ran onto the pitch and attacked Alkmaar goalkeeper Esteban. The keeper was not amused and proceeded to kick the fan before security carried him away.

What happened next is kind of strange. The referee decided to give Esteban a red card.

Alkmaar manager Gert Jan Verbeek was so upset with the Esteban red card that he ordered his team off the field, posting the game.

After the game, the ref explained that he issued the red card because Esteban should have walked away from the attacker.
