Euro 2008 - Matchday One Preview
Matchday One in Euro 2008 kicks off on Saturday 7 June when hosts Switzerland face a tough opener against the Czech Republic and later on in the evening Portugal tackle Turkey.
Switzerland have been written off by many pundits already, but this will suit Kobi Kuhn's side. Despite being hosts, Switzerland have no pressure on them and they could spring a shock against a Czech side where expectations are high.
Much will depend on Dortmund striker Alexander Frei, who has a remarkable goal scoring record of 35 goals in 58 matches and is Switzerland's all time top goal scorer. If he can start firing, the Swiss could pull off a shock in this tournament akin to Greece four years ago.
A young Portugal side who were of course beaten finalists in the Euro 2004 will be expected to beat Turkey but it is important that the attention is not shifted from the team's efforts to whether or not starlet Ronaldo is joining Real Madrid from Manchester United or not.
Portugal have an array of attacking talent, such as Deco, Quaresma, Nani and of course Ronaldo but they will have to break down a workman-like Turkish side that will be happy with a draw on their opening game.
