Fans Steal Bits of Yankee Stadium Despite Tight Security
New York City police say they arrested more than a dozen people for stealing pieces of Yankee Stadium during the 85-year-old ballpark's final game.
Police say 18 fans were charged with possessing stolen property.
Officers were out in force for the stadium's final game on Sunday to keep souvenir hunters from tearing away pieces of the place.
Indeed, some fans have claimed that security at Yankee Stadium was a little too tight. More than 2,000 security workers were patrolling the stadium during the final game Sunday, about five times more than usual, and there have been anecdotes about officers being heavy-handed.
Another notable incident occurred about midway through the game when a veteran Bleacher Creature named Larry was violently ejected from the stadium for telling 258 pound Yankee right-hander Sidney Ponson to "eat a salad." Ponson laughed it off. Rude cheers from the bleachers are a Bronx baseball tradition and the Creatures are a Yankee Stadium fixture. Fans grumbled about "freedom of speech" as Larry was carried away by cops and stadium security. Larry begged the cops to reconsider pointing out that he hadn't cursed at Ponson.
Last month, New Yorker Bradford Campeau-Laurion claimed he was ejected from Yankee Stadium for not staying in his seat during the singing of "God Bless America".
"I attempted to get up to use the restroom, rather urgently, during the 7th inning stretch as God Bless America was beginning. As I attempted to walk down the aisle and exit my section into the tunnel, I was stopped by a police officer. He informed me that I had to wait until the song was over. I responded that I had to use the restroom and that I did not care about God Bless America.
"As soon as the latter came out of my mouth, my right arm was twisted violently behind my back and I was informed that I was being escorted out of the stadium. A second officer then joined in and twisted my left arm, also in an excessively forceful manner, behind my back. I informed them they were violating my First Amendment rights and that I had done nothing wrong, with no response from them.

Yankee Stadium field box seats behind Yankee Dugout. This photo was taken by Jay Gould who watched the game with his grandfather Gus Harak at the 2nd to last game ever in Yankee Stadium.

I can't think of a better way to show your love of a team than to steal memorabilia... >:(

The stadium is to be demolished... does it really matter if fans take a few chunks? Otherwise a concrete part (as it were) of NYC history will simply fall to dust, and mementos thereof will be kept from the hands of the very fans who gave the stadium its life. Here's a cool article about how stadiums tend to die young)

Growing up we had a seat - actually the entire chair - from the original Yankee Stadium. I remember sitting in it and thinking about how somebody, lots of somebody's, watched Babe Ruth play while sitting in that seat.
I didn't even think of trying to take anything during the games I was at this year - I was too depressed by the Yankees losing. this pic was taken the night the Yanks season effectively ended - August 28, 2008 - Yanks lose to Sox 11-3.

My dad & I traveled from Chicago (Go Cubs!) to NYC to catch a game at Yankee Stadium before it was torn down to make way for the new ballpark. We were there quite early and nobody was sitting in front of us so I thought I'd take a picture of the old seats.
