Federer Beats Tsonga At The 2010 Australian Open Semifinals
The 2010 Australian Open tennis semifinals wrapped up in Melbourne today. The last pair of finalists was determined as world No. 1 Roger Federer beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Federer's performance was at its highest, while Tsonga looked thrashed. There was not a single break point in the match. Perhaps, Tsonga's victory over No. 3 seeded Novak Djokovic got him too excited before the big game with the world's No.1 today. Federer will now face 22-year-old Andy Murray of the U.K. in the finals on Sunday.
Federer will seek fourth Australian Open title of his career. He has previously won in 2004, 2006 and 2007. The title was taken away from him by Novak Djokovic in 2008 and than Rafael Nadal in 2009. But now that Nadal is out with a knee injury and Djokovic was crashed by Tsonga in the quarterfinals, Federer will sure hope his health remains strong as the holder of a whopping fifteen Grand Slam titles will try to go for his 16th. He will face No.5 seeded Andy Murray, whose career record is far less stellar. Murray has only made it into the finals of a Grand Slam tournament once when he played against Roger Federer at the 2008 U.S. Open. Federer went on to win that match. However, at 22, Murray has youth and an unwavering ambition to win on his side. Should Murray win against Federer, he will become the first British man to hold a major title in 74 years.
On the women's side, Serena Williams will face Justine Henin of Belgium on Saturday. No.1 seeded Williams will seek her fifth overall and second consecutive Australian Open title. If Williams wins, it will be the 14th Grand Slam title of her career. On the other hand, Henin will fight hard to get her second Australian Open title. She last won in 2004. Her last Grand Slam title win was in 2007. She has taken a 20-month retirement from the sport after that. Twenty-seven-year-old Henin came back empowered in January of 2010 and broke into the Australian Open finals right away.
