Footballs soon to be embedded with GPS technology
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is planning to develop a football embedded with a GPS system which allows easy tracking for the refs and fans.
This idea is still in the infancy stages as the tech team is having troubles making the ball light enough to meet NFL regulations.
As Narasimhan sees it, a football laced with GPS technology would be able to portray the game from the ball's point of view, complete with real-time tracking and virtual three-dimensional flight. The smart ball would be enhanced with a ground-based positioning network to provide accuracy within an inch. (The military usually classifies the most precise GPS data.)
The GPS usage in football is not only limited to the ball but there are plans to embed the same technology into gloves and shoes to track how the players handle the ball and how the kicker's kick. Having a GPS tracking system on the ball will make those controversial calls a lot more easier and conclusive especially in a big game like the 2009 Super bowl.
