Forever Champions
It’s November 5, 2009 and the Yankees have taken the World Series! Among all of the series thus far this was one of the most exciting series for Yankees. They hadn’t been to the World Series since 2003, and haven’t won since 2000. This was also a very exciting series for the Phillies. Taking the 2008 title as world champs, the Phillies had a lot of pressure to pull through and win for the second year in a row. Unfortunately for them though, the Yankees stopped them. This series wasn’t all about the teams though. Well, here at the Richard Stockton College of NJ anyway. As many people know, New Jersey doesn’t have many sports teams of its own. Therefore, fans must favor a team from a state close by. Majority of the state is split between NY and PA. This is most evident here at Stockton. This World Series put north and south Jersey students at odds. Hallways were flooded with blue or red, representing either team. Even if you were a fan of a different team, students were representing their part of the state. Some of the bigger baseball fans would get into heated debates and others would just look at the rivalry as fun. Two days before the series started, one Phillies fan said “this is the perfect series for Stockton” and it was. The tension built as the games went on and the Yankees were taking the lead. After game 5, Phillies fans were beyond excited that the series was being stretched another game and being brought back to the Bronx. Fools they were. The Yankees won the game with a four run lead making them World Champions of 2009. When the last out of the ninth inning was called, Stockton was a mad house. Yankees fans from surrounding apartments all joined together outside with Yankee blankets and flags, cheering different chants, and flooding all of the upperclassmen side of campus with Yankee pride. Last night was definitely a memorable time for Yankee fans everywhere though.
