Galveston Pirate Soccer Club Go Back to Basics at School
Pirate's Go Back to Basics at School
by Marc Roseblade
Galveston Pirate Soccer Club appear to be have been sailing the seven seas in search of plunder recently as their next match isn't until November 13th and it seems like an eternity since their last competitive match in the newly formed SPSL.
They have been filling their time constructively though with a couple of friendly matches, the most recent of which was against local side Houston Heat on Sunday.
A scoreline of 11 - 1 isn't exactly the type of match that challenges a team of the Pirate calibre but it keeps the senses sharp and stops the players losing match fitness.
Jachin Whittington (left), Carlos Menjivar, Uriel del Valle all got a goal each, Mitchell and Felipe Escobedo both managed two each with captain invincible Roy Hernandez scoring the remaining four to take his tally for the season to an incredible 26 which everyone will agree, that at any level of football, is a superb return for his efforts.
It's a bit of a double edged sword for coach Keyes as Roy's scoring feats are bound to be of interest to bigger, more high profile sides which would be great for Roy as he clearly has an eye for goal and would grace any side willing to invest in his future. The down side to that would be the loss of such an influential and integral player in the Pirate side.
The club have also been busy out in the community visiting local schools helping to develop local kids soccer skills. The most recent recipients of a Pirate invasion were Holy Family Catholic School in Galveston with dribbling, passing and shooting all on the training agenda for the day. Tickets for the Pirates first home tie at the Courville Stadium on November 14 were also being handed out free to the kids at school as coach Brendan Keyes and his players help to raise the awareness of the beautiful game in the picturesque city of Galveston.
Brendan and his side now have a little under two weeks left until their double header over a two day period, when they firstly meet MLS academy side Club America on the 13th and then have their first ever SPSL home game against Corpus Christi the following day. Tickets $10.
It's like buses, nothing for ages, then they all come at the same time!
Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh!
