Game 5 of the World Series Postponed By Rain Delay
With the Philadelphia Phillies on the verge of winning the 2008 World Series, Mother Nature rained on their parade. Game 5 of the World Series was stopped in the sixth inning due to a rain delay. The game was tied 2-2 when the game was called by the umpires. The remainder of Game 5 is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 8 pm local time, if weather permits.
So far, the forecast doesn't look good as a coastal storm is set to hit the Northeastern US.
The rainout raised a number of questions among baseball fans, namely what would have happened if the Phillies had a lead when the game was called off. Rain delay rules state that a game can be ended after 5 1/2 innings and that whichever team is ahead at the time is declared the victor. In theory, if the Phillies were leading at the time the game was declared a rainout, the Phillies could have been declared the winners of the game and the World Series.
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, however, said that he wouldn't have allowed that to happen. Selig also said the Series would not continue until there are decent weather conditions in Philadelphia.
With clouds on the horizon, Philadelphia's World Series parade could be seriously delayed, if it even happens at all.

Jon Azpiri, I like this story. It's good stuff. Yeah, for the latest news story by the Associated Press' baseball writer, see:

It is historic...the first suspended game in World Series history. The game was tied at 2-2 when it was suspended in 6th inning.

How does Bud Selig continue to annoint himself Providence? If the rules dictate a winner after a legitimate rain delay, where does the commisioner get off telling the team leading at the time the rules don't apply? Selig is fortunate the game was tied. He showed poor judgment speculating a scenario where one team was leading after a rain delay. Throw this one with the All-Star/home field advantage nonsense and it it to the Selig legacy.
