Gary Speed Found Dead

Gary Speed, manager of the Wales football team, was found dead in his Chester home on the morning of November 27, 2011 after an apparent suicide. He was 42 years old.

Gary Speed has been manager of the Welsh national soccer team for 11 months. He had played for Wales previously, with a record 85 caps.

Tributes have been pouring in from fellow players, politicians, celebrities, and fans:

Alan Shearer said he would "miss him dreadfully", and Ryan Giggs said he was "one of the nicest men in football".

Gary Speed had apparently hanged himself. Cheshire police issued a statement:

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. The family have requested that they are left in peace to grieve at this difficult time. A family tribute will be released at a later date but not today."

Later in the day, Swansea played Aston Villa to a 0-0 draw.

A minute's silence before kick-off was broken with the crowd bursting into applause after a few seconds and singing "One Gary Speed, there's only one Gary Speed."
