A lucky escape for a snowboarder trapped on a ski lift in the Alps. Dominik Podolsky was coming down the mountain on the ski lift when it was turned off for the day just after 4pm. 10 meters above the ground with no mobile phone and with temperatures of minus 18. "I thought about jumping down but then I'd have probably broken both legs and would have frozen to death," Podolsky told reporters. So he decided to burn the contents of his wallet with his cigarette lighter, and with the last €20 note a snow cat driver saw him and raised the alarm.

Not quite a Joe Simpson "Touching the Void" style escape, but lucky all the same.

A German snowboarder, stranded on a ski lift for six hours, saved himself by burning all his cash to attract attention in the icy darkness. He was burning his last 20 euro note when he was spotted.
