German Women's Soccer Team Playboy Shoot: 'We're Not All Butch'
The German Women's national soccer team is trying to dispel the notion that all female soccer players are "butch". Their strategy: to pose for playboy. Not quite coincidentally, Germany is hosting the Women's World Cup this month. Said Kristina Gessat, "We did the Playboy shoot to disprove the cliche that all female soccer players are "mannweiben" (butch). The message is: look- we're normal and lovely girls."
The Playboy Germany shoot features Selina Wagner, Julia Simic, Annika Doppler, Kristina Gessat, and Ivana Rudelic, who want to prove to the world that the "mannweiber" cliche is false, and that female soccer players are not like dudes.
Since this is Playboy, there's an interview aspect as well, in which the players talk about the difference between being gay in women's soccer and being gay in men's soccer (three guesses which league is more accepting). Here's the German-language Playboy interview, and here's a dreadful translation. Note that those links point to Playboy, which has NSFW ads. We know, we know, you read it for the articles.
The FIFA Women's World Cup begins on June 26, wiht hosts Germany facing Canada, and Nigeria facing France.
