Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was suspended with no pay by the NBA commissioner David Stern today. Arenas was accused of bringing four guns into the locker room and threatening his teammate Javaris Crittenton over an alleged gambling dispute. Arenas reacted saying he did not mean any harm to Crittenton and was just a playing a joke on his teammate. Today, NBA ruled Arenas would be suspended indefinitely without pay effective immediately. Arenas currently has a $111-million six-year contract with the Wizards. A separate investigation will be carried out by the NBA, according to Stern.

"Although it is clear that the actions of Mr. Arenas will ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse, his ongoing conduct has led me to conclude that he is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game. Accordingly, I am suspending Mr. Arenas indefinitely, without pay, effective immediately pending the completion of the investigation by the NBA."

Arenas has not commented on the situation yet. There have not been any updates on his Twitter page either.

Gilbert Arenas SUSPENDED: Suspension Indefinite, Without PayGilbert Arenas has been suspended indefinitely without pay following reports that he drew a gun on a teammate. Arenas has since met with law enforcement, and a grand jury could become involved. Arenas says the entire episode was a "misguided effort to play a joke."

Below is a statement from NBA Commissioner David Stern:

NEW YORK, Jan. 6, 2010 -- National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern issued the following statement today:

"The possession of firearms by an NBA player in an NBA arena is a matter of the utmost concern to us. I initially thought it prudent to refrain from taking immediate action because of the pendency of a criminal investigation involving the office of the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and the Metropolitan Police Department, and the consideration of this matter by a grand jury sitting in the District of Columbia. For the same reason, I directed the Wizards to refrain from taking any action.

Wizards personnel continue to be interviewed by law enforcement authorities, some are scheduled for appearance before the grand jury and the investigation is proceeding with the intensity that one would expect for such a serious incident.

The NBA did the right thing in suspending Gilbert Arenas. The issue of guns is not a joke. It is hoped that Arenas would be expelled from the NBA.

The NBA players must remember that they are our Role Models; not the scoring titles or MVP's, etc...but as professional athletes, that our young and aspiring kids are idolizing at. And gun-toting one's aren't one to be looked up at. So disciplinary action is necessary to uphold the image of the NBA.
