'Here Goes Something': Zia Kicks Ass on First Ski Jump

A helmet-cam video of a 10-year-old's first ski jump is going viral. We get to watch as 4th-grader Zia psychs herself for the ski jump, and takes in some last-minute tips from her coach.

We see what Zia sees: an impossibly steep-looking runway, promising only certain death. This is what a steep drop-off looks like to those about to do the dropping off.

Then it's go time... with a nervous, Joker-style "Here... I... go", Zia passes the point of no return.

Zia delivers, crushing the K40 jump at Utah Olympic park. Zia followed her coach's advice ("don't snowplow"), or this would be a very different sort of viral video.

Zia's first ski jump earned the seal of approval from pro ski jumper Lindsey Van, who learned to jump on that very same hill.

The video was posted to YouTube by someone who writes that Zia is a family friend; later Zia's mom, Jennifer Terry, told Good Morning America that she had posted the video.

The jump is not small, the launch is a good 6 feet high and it crosses a Cat Track before the landing slope starts, at a guess a good 8 feet horizontal, and that's only to the start of the landing ramp, no idea what distance she got on this, her first K40 jump.

As for Zia, her sights are now set on K60. There's something universal about this video: maybe it's about perspective and how we measure the challenges before us.

Maybe it's about trusting speed.

Maybe it's just about awesome ski jumping.
