GM Place In Vancouver To Be Renamed: Rogers Arena
GM Place Is Getting New Name: Rogers Arena
Tuesday in Vancouver was time for out with one corporation in with another, in the battle of corporate naming rights for GM Place - make that Rogers Arena.
The two parties have signed a ten-year deal which gives Rogers broadcast, naming and wireless rights for the Canucks. This is the first time any company has secured all three sponsorship strands.
Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed - who grew up in Vancouver - attended the press conference as did Rogers vice-chair, Phil Lind.
It was widely believed that the contest for naming rights came down to two Canadian communications giants – Rogers and Telus. This will now be the second blow Telus has suffered on the sports sponsorship front. The company lost out to Bell to be the telecommunications sponsor for the 2010 Winter Games.[/q]
This gives Rogers the Rogers Centre in Toronto and now an arena that it plaster its name all over in Vancouver. General Motors will stay on as sponsor in other capacities.

That's actually really appropriate. The arena's new coverage is almost as expensive as their mobile coverage.

Ever since Rogers tried to push the cable hike without subscribers approval mid 90s. The name Rogers is actually one of the most hated names in Vancouver. It reminds me of a Toronto name......yuck! Where is Super Save, Kiewit or Beedie....... more local names.
