Golfer Records Five Holes-in-One in a Week
Illinois golfer Curt Hocker has recorded a staggering five holes-in-one in the span of one week, including two on Saturday. Most golfers go their entire lives without a hole in one, but Hocker has had seven this year alone.
"I don't know what to think," said Hocker, who works in the club's pro shop. "After each one I say it's over, and it keeps happening."
Friends and family, 15 of whom have witnessed Hocker's strokes of luck while playing with him, are equally mystified.
"It's incomprehensible this kind of luck could happen, but it does happen," said El Paso pro Steve Fulton. "There are other things in life that have been just as weird and eerie that have happened. What are the odds?"
Some question the veracity of Hocker's story, but so far it appears he has plenty of witnesses who saw him accomplish the feat.
It's easy to understand the cynicism, since the odds of hitting so many aces are staggering.
A 1999 issue of Golf Digest reported the odds of an amateur making two holes in one in the same round are 9.2-million to 1. Scheid's study said it was closer to 67-million to 1. Twice in the past three months - Aug. 7 and Nov. 1 - Hocker has made two aces in the same round. Actually, the Aug. 7 round included a conventional double eagle, but since that is allegedly more rare, it fits the bill.
