Veteran pitcher Greg Maddux will retire from baseball on Monday after 23 years in the Major Leagues.

The four-time Cy Young winner played for several teams throughout his career, but is probably best known for his years with the Atlanta Braves where he was part of a killer starting rotation that included John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. Maddux helped the Braves win the 1995 World Series.

The 42-year-old ends his career with 355 wins, ranking eighth all-time among Major League pitchers. The mild-mannered Maddux was never an overpowering pitcher like contemporaries Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson, relying instead on guile and tremendous pitch control.

Maddux appears to be a certain Hall of Famer as every pitcher with more than 300 wins has been inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
