June 22, 2011 Marks the 25th Anniversary of 1986 World Cup Match Between England vs Argentina. The Classic Match Saw Diego Maradona Score Two Goals: The Hand of God Goal As Well as Goal of the Century. Here is Video
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Hand of God goal. Depending on your point of view, it was either the greatest or most suspect performance in football history. On June 22, 1986, Diego Maradona scored two goals vs England in a World Cup quarterfinal: the Hand of God goal and another that has been described as the Goal of the Century.
For those not familiar with the story, Diego Armando Maradona scored a goal with his hand, a charge he denied for years despite plenty of evidence. Later in the game, Maradona cut through the entire English defence to score one of the most amazing goals in history. A pretty good day at the office.
In the second half of the 1986 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England, Maradona scored a goal that has lived in infamy. England midfielder Steve Hodge attempted to clear the ball out of his own end when it deflected and hit Maradona's hand and went into the net.
The referees somehow missed the call and let the goal stand.
When asked about how the ball the went in, Maradona said in a post-game press conference: "un poco con la cabeza de Maradona y otro poco con la mano de Dios." (a little bit with the head and another little bit with the hand of God."
Minutes later, Maradona scored another goal single-handedly. Starting from Argentina's own half, Maradona dribbled past several English player before tucking the ball past goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
The Hand of God game has lived on in infamy. In Argentina, Maradona is seen as a hero (an Argentine friend of mine once said that watching Maradona score the second goal against England was the happiest moment of his life). Meanwhile, English football fans have yet to forgive Argentina for the defeat.
Here is the Diego Maradona Hand of God video. In addition, here is video of the Goal of the Century. Check out the play-by-play by Victor Hugo Morales, who completely loses his mind.
